Best Smart Curtain Motors for Indian Homes 2026

Motorised curtains are one of the most satisfying smart home upgrades — and one of the most misunderstood. The wrong motor for your track type or curtain weight means a system that jams, skips, or burns out within a year. The right setup means curtains that open at sunrise, close when your AC turns on, and respond to voice commands without a second thought.

We install motorised curtains regularly across Indian homes and have learned what works under real-world conditions: heavy blackout curtains for Rajasthan summers, sheer curtains on curved rods in Mumbai apartments, wooden curtain rods in heritage homes. Here's what you need to know before buying.

Track type — the most important decision

Before choosing a motor, you need to know what track your curtains run on. The three main types in Indian homes:

  • I-rail (I-channel/U-channel): The most common type in Indian homes. A metal or plastic channel with a sliding runner. Most motorised curtain systems are designed for this. Standard I-rail profiles are compatible with most motors listed here.
  • U-rail (C-profile): A U-shaped metal track, common in premium installations. Compatible with I-rail motors if the runner system matches, but verify before ordering.
  • Round rod/curtain rod: A decorative round or square rod with rings. Only some motors (like SwitchBot Curtain 3) clip onto rods without requiring a track at all. Traditional rail motors cannot be used on round rods.
  • Roller blinds track: A completely different mechanism — requires a dedicated roller blind motor (tubular motor), not a curtain sliding motor. Do not confuse these.

If you're unsure what you have, take a photo of your current track and share it with us before buying anything. Getting this wrong is an expensive mistake.

Motor power and curtain weight

Indian homes often have heavy curtains — thick blackout drapes in bedrooms, heavy cotton weaves in living rooms. Standard curtain motors are rated for curtains up to 25–35 kg total weight on the track. Heavy Indian blackout curtains on a 3-metre track can approach this limit quickly.

Always check the motor's rated load capacity against the actual weight of your curtains. When in doubt, size up. An underpowered motor running near its rated limit will fail within 1–2 years of daily use. An adequately-sized motor will run for a decade.

The five options we're comparing

Smartify Curtain logo

Smartify Curtain Motor (Zigbee)

Our curtain motor is a Zigbee-based tubular track motor designed for I-rail and U-rail installations. It's rated for curtains up to 30 kg on tracks up to 5 metres — sufficient for most living room and bedroom installations. The motor runs quietly (under 40dB) and includes an obstacle detection feature that stops the motor if the curtain jams mid-travel, preventing track or motor damage.

Because it runs on Zigbee, it integrates natively with the full Smartify ecosystem. A single automation can open the curtains, turn on the lights, and turn off the AC simultaneously. Scene triggers include time-based schedules, sun position (sunrise/sunset calculated automatically), and sensor triggers (motion detection, door opening). The motor is wired — it requires a 220V power supply at the track, which means an electrician needs to run a wire to the curtain track during installation.

Price: ₹8,000–₹12,000 per motor plus installation. Protocol: Zigbee 3.0. Track type: I-rail / U-rail. Load: Up to 30 kg.

Aqara logo

Aqara Curtain Controller B1

The Aqara B1 is a battery-powered curtain motor that clips onto most standard I-rail tracks without requiring any wiring. This is its defining advantage: no electrician, no wire running, no wall penetration. The motor runs on a rechargeable battery that lasts 1–2 months per charge under typical use.

The limitations are real: battery-powered motors have lower torque than wired motors, making them less suitable for heavy blackout curtains or long tracks. The rated load is up to 12 kg — sufficient for light sheers or medium-weight curtains on shorter tracks, but inadequate for heavy Indian blackout drapes on 3.5+ metre tracks. For lightweight curtains in rented apartments (where you can't run wires), the B1 is an excellent choice. For heavy curtains or permanent installations, choose a wired motor.

Price: ₹7,000–₹10,000. Protocol: Zigbee 3.0. Track type: I-rail. Load: Up to 12 kg.

Zemismart ZM25TQ

Zemismart makes a range of Zigbee and WiFi curtain motors popular in the smart home community. The ZM25TQ is a Zigbee tubular motor for I-rail tracks with a 25 kg rating. Build quality is decent for the price, and Zigbee compatibility means it works with a wide range of hubs including Aqara, SmartThings, and Home Assistant.

The main caution with Zemismart: their product lineup changes rapidly, and finding exact documentation, spare parts, or local support is difficult. They're primarily available through AliExpress and Amazon imports, so warranty service in India is limited. For technically-inclined buyers who want a capable Zigbee curtain motor at a lower price point than branded options, Zemismart is viable. For buyers who want reliable after-sales support, brand-backed options are safer.

Price: ₹5,000–₹8,000 (imported). Protocol: Zigbee 3.0. Track type: I-rail. Load: Up to 25 kg.

SwitchBot Curtain 3

SwitchBot Curtain 3 is unique: it's a robot that clips onto your existing curtain rod (round or square) or I-rail track and drives the curtain by gripping and moving along the rod. No track modification, no wiring — it charges via USB-C and installs in minutes.

For homes with decorative round rods where replacing the rod with an I-rail is impractical, SwitchBot Curtain 3 is the most practical option available. Performance is good for lighter curtains (rated up to 8 kg per unit, use two units for heavier loads). Noise is slightly higher than purpose-built track motors. Integration with Alexa, Google Home, and the SwitchBot Hub is solid.

The limitation is weight capacity. Indian homes with heavy blackout curtains or velvet drapes will exceed the single-unit capacity. Two units can be paired on one rod to share the load, but this adds cost.

Price: ₹7,000–₹10,000 per unit. Protocol: Bluetooth (WiFi via SwitchBot Hub). Track type: Round rod or I-rail (clip-on). Load: Up to 8 kg per unit.

Tuya logo

Generic Tuya WiFi Curtain Motors

Tuya-based WiFi curtain motors appear at ₹3,000–₹6,000 on Amazon and Flipkart. They work with the Tuya Smart app, Alexa, and Google Home. For basic open/close/position control of light-to-medium curtains, they function adequately.

The practical limitations are similar to other Tuya generics: build quality varies, rated load capacity claims should be treated with scepticism, and warranty support is non-existent through typical import channels. For temporary or experimental setups, fine. For permanent home installation, invest in a named brand.

Price: ₹3,000–₹6,000. Protocol: WiFi. Track type: I-rail (most). Load: Rated 20–30 kg (treat claims with caution).

Scene integration — why it matters

A standalone curtain motor that opens and closes via app is useful. A curtain motor integrated into scenes is transformative. Some examples from actual installations we've done:

  • Wake-up scene: At 6:45 AM, bedroom curtains open 30% (not fully — enough to let in light without glare), bedroom lights ramp to 40% warm white, AC switches to fan mode. No alarm, no jarring start to the day.
  • Movie mode: Living room curtains close completely, lights dim to 10% warm amber, TV input switches to HDMI 1 via IR blaster. One tap from the sofa.
  • AC efficiency: When outdoor temperature sensor reads above 35 degrees, bedroom curtains close automatically during afternoon hours to reduce solar heat gain — saving 15–20% on AC load.
  • Leave home: When the last person leaves (detected by phone GPS or door sensor), curtains close, all lights turn off, AC shuts down.

These scenes require curtain motors and other devices on compatible protocols. Zigbee-based motors (Smartify, Aqara, Zemismart) integrate cleanly into these automations. WiFi-based motors and Bluetooth-only motors require workarounds.

Frequently asked questions

Do smart curtain motors work with all curtain tracks?

No. The motor must be compatible with your specific track type. Most wired motors work with I-rail and U-rail tracks. SwitchBot Curtain 3 is the exception — it clips onto round rods without any track modification. Roller blind motors are a completely different category and cannot be used with curtain tracks. Always confirm track compatibility before purchasing.

Can motorised curtains handle heavy Indian blackout curtains?

Yes, if you choose the right motor. Heavy blackout curtains on a 3–4 metre track can weigh 20–30 kg or more. The Smartify wired motor (rated 30 kg) and Zemismart ZM25TQ (rated 25 kg) handle this. Battery-powered motors like Aqara B1 (12 kg) and SwitchBot (8 kg per unit) are not suitable for heavy Indian drapes. Always weigh your curtains before choosing a motor rating.

Do smart curtain motors require an electrician to install?

Wired motors require a 220V power point near the curtain track — this typically needs an electrician if you don't already have power there. Battery-powered motors (Aqara B1, SwitchBot) require no electrical work at all. Our installations always include professional track mounting and wiring where needed.

Can the curtains open automatically at sunrise?

Yes. All major smart curtain systems support time-based schedules. Zigbee-based systems (Smartify, Aqara) can use calculated sunrise/sunset times for your geographic location, so curtains automatically adjust as daylight hours change through the year — no manual schedule updates needed.
